Professional Development 4.
Professional Development, although might be called Continuing Professional Development, is about learning to earn or maintain professional credentials, and is often done through a series of short courses.
When it comes to choosing the right PD to complete, can sometimes be documented by the Professional Body you are with, the type of industry you are in, how regulated your industry is, or you might choose based on where you believe your weaknesses are, or the interest within your industry you have.
For a business owner, Professional Development might come from identifying the weaknesses in which the business owners identify whilst performing their SWOT ( Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat).
Some of the areas you might consider as Training are also known as Professional Development which could include any of the following,
- Marketing
- Bookkeeping
- Human Resource- Employment, Staff Induction,
- Work Health and Safety
- Sales
- Understanding potential clients
- SEO
- Leadership
CPD is often completed over a 12-month period and often will require industry professionals will be allocated a range of points in which they need to complete in CPD each year, which allows the professional to complete what they need to do. How does it work, each session is allocated a point value e.g. 5 CPD points, and depending on the industry you might need to reach 45 points a year, in this case, you would need to do 9 of these sessions a year, which equates to almost once a month, therefore it is important you understand if your industry requires you to complete CPD as part of your registration, and the value allocated to any workshop, training session, meeting that you are thinking of attending.
It can be a challenging time to ascertain which PD is right for you, and your circumstances, especially if your industry does not have a professional association or you aren’t a member of one, however, you need to choose which will improve your knowledge of your industry and better able to help and support your clients.
